District of Innovation Plan

The 84th Texas Legislature passed House Bill 1842, which allows traditional independent school districts the ability to access flexibilities which had previously been reserved for Texas’ open enrollment charter schools. In order for an independent school district to obtain these flexibilities, the Districts must seek designation as a “District of Innovation.” On March 24, 2016, the Lago Vista ISD Board of Trustees initiated the process by adopting a resolution to pursue a “District of Innovation” designation.  The final plan was approved by the Lago Vista ISD Board of Trustees on June 12, 2017.

HB5 Community & Student Engagement

House Bill 5 (HB5), passed during the 83rd Legislature in 2013, made substantial changes to the state's curriculum and graduation requirements, assessment program, and accountability system. The community and student engagement requirement of HB 5 is part of the bill’s goal of reducing the predominance of standardized testing in Texas public education. Additionally, a performance rating must be assigned to the district and each campus, based on the evaluation, which includes one of the following: exemplary, recognized, acceptable, or unacceptable for both overall performance and for each individual evaluation category.

The categories included in the evaluation and rating consist of: Fine Arts, Wellness and Physical Education; Community and Parental Involvement; 21st Century Workforce Development; Second Language Acquisition; Dropout Prevention Strategies; Educational Programs for Gifted and Talented Students, and Compliance (rated with yes/no).

Campus & District Improvement Plans

Under provisions of the Texas Education Code, every school district is required to develop a district plan to improve student performance. Lago Vista ISD’s District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC) utilizes community, business, and staff input to develop the District’s Improvement Plan. District and campus plans are developed annually and include performance objectives and strategies that are mutually supportive of the District goals approved by the Lago Vista ISD Board of Trustees.
